As we wait for further Church of England Redress Scheme updates, we continue to look into the information we have – this time about medical assessment.
The Church of England Redress Scheme is due to be open to enquiries in ‘the latter part of 2026’ according to the CofE’s official website.
In order to get as many people as possible ready to hit the eventual opening date with as much information prepared, we have been accepting claim enquiries and answering as many questions as possible about the information we do currently have.

Will I need a medical assessment in order to make a claim?
It is possible that a medical assessment may be needed before redress can be offered to applicants.
From what we have learnt, most of these assessments can be completed online at a time suitable to you, depending on availability. Two suitably qualified medical assessors will be offered to the applicant, and best efforts will be taken to accommodate reasonable requests for preferred gender of the assessor.
Why might a medical assessment be necessary?
Should one be necessary, assessment findings will be used to help decide whether certain types of therapy and support are required, and for how long. It also provides necessary information to assessors, so that they are able to consistently and fairly award redress.
How long will a claim take?
As the Scheme has yet to launch it is hard to say, though as it will be based on very individual circumstances for each applicant, the process must take into consideration the requirements of each person. Every final offer awarded will be unique to the applicant.
Should I get in touch before the Scheme goes live?
As long as you feel emotionally up to doing so, then yes – absolutely. If you are unsure whether or not to proceed, it may be best to check with your GP or therapist, or other healthcare professional, to jointly decide whether this course of action is right for you at this time.
By getting in touch with us prior to the Scheme opening, you are ensuring that you are right at the front of the queue, as applications work on a first-come, first-serve basis with regards to submission and processing.
All claims may be unique and take varying amounts of time to complete, but you can at least get yours into the system as early as possible to ensure that you are being dealt with from the very beginning.
I have more questions about the Church of England Redress Scheme, what should I do?
Please do not hesitate to get in touch with a member of our team. They will be able to advise whether you have a valid claim and answer any questions along the way. There is no obligation to proceed upon making an enquiry.
