Compensation calculations in the Church of England Redress Scheme

In an ongoing development, the Church of England is introducing a Redress Scheme for survivors of abuse within the Church.

As this is a brand new Scheme, we have been taking the time to answer some frequently asked questions about it. This time, we take a look at compensation amounts awarded and the criteria required for doing so.

To learn more about eligibility to make a claim from the Scheme, check out our previous article here.

Why is the Church of England Redress Scheme being set up?

The Scheme is being set up as part of the Church’s response to criticism and findings made by The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA). One of the IICSA’s investigations focused on abuse within the Anglican Church.

How does the Scheme work?

Though it has yet to be finalised, the proposed scheme follows a four-stage framework to assess claims and determine compensation. We have provided the current criteria and awards range in the following section.

What are the proposed four-stage compensation payment calculations?

The final details of the criteria may be subject to change, but as it currently stands they are listed as follows:

  • Stage 1 – Type of Abuse

Your application is assessed based on the abuse you experienced, with awards ranging from £5,000 to £150,000.

  • Stage 2 – Aggravating Factors

Additional factors may increase your Stage 1 award by up to 100%.

  • Stage 3 – Impact of Abuse

The effect of the abuse on your life is considered, potentially adding £10,000 to £250,000 to your award.

  • Stage 4 – Exceptional Circumstances

In rare cases, a further 20% uplift may be applied.

When is the Church of England Redress Scheme going live, and is it worth me making an enquiry for representation right now?

The Scheme hasn’t yet gone live, as it is still passing through the parliamentary process – but it has at least been approved by the Church of England. We will be sure to provide an update as soon as we know an opening date, though it is intended that the Scheme will run for five years once it begins.

Even though it has yet to go live, it is absolutely worth getting in touch with us on 0113 306 9001 to get yourself signed up. We will be able to assess your circumstances and do all the preparatory work in advance, so that we can submit your claim as soon as the Scheme goes live.

The earlier you do so, the sooner we can start building your case and hopefully have it ready to go on day one.

I suffered abuse within the Church of England. What should my first move be?

For anyone looking to take their abuse further, we would always recommend reporting it to the police. The only way that action can be taken to prevent future abuse if if they are aware of it happening historically.
